The prime minister will visit Suwalki, Punsk and Sejny and discuss cooperation between Lithuanian and Polish municipalities and the situation of the Lithuanian community.
“We will speak with the Suwalki mayor about the possibility to build a Lithuanian kindergarten here as the local community has been asking for this service,” Deividas Matulionis, a vie chancellor of the Lithuanian government, told BNS Lithuania.
In his words, educational issues will also be discussed with Polish politicians.
Poland has lately reduced requirements for the formation of ethnic minority classes. And Lithuanians want to preserve four Lithuanian schools in the Sejny area, despite the number of schoolchildren going down.
“We’d really want for that number not to go down and also want the best possible conditions for Lithuanian-origin citizens of Poland,” Matulionis said.
Lithuania is also asking Poland to resolve the textbook issue as many existing books are useless ssince the government keeps changing the educational programs.
Around 5,000 Lithuanians live in Poland.
