Lithuanian-Polish interparlt assembly to resume work this year, parlt vice speaker hopes

He discussed the matter with his Polish counterpart Ryszard Terlecki on Tuesday.

According to Nekrošius, Lithuanian lawmakers will travel to Poland in September to discuss the resumption of the assembly’s work, and the first sitting should take place by the end of this year.

“I think we will go to Poland in late September and have a working group to discuss the assembly’s guidelines,” Nekrošius told journalists. “We hope to have the first assembly meeting as early as this year, at the end of this year.”

The assembly held the last sitting on May, 2009.

The assembly would discuss issues related to education, culture, Lithuanian schools in Poland and Polish schools in Lithuania, Nekrošius said.

Lithuania and Poland’s bilateral relations were marred by problems linked to the situation of the Polish minority in Lithuania but Warsaw has lately softened its tone on the issue and both countries have exchanged top-level visits.

The Lithuanian and Polish parliament currently have a tripartite assembly with Ukraine.
