Lithuanian president calls LVŽS resolution on new parliamentary probe “revenge”

“I consider it to be oligarchs’ revenge as these specific oligarchs are now involved in a judicial process. So it’s natural, and it probably should have been this way that various compromising situations would be created. From what is seen from those my or not my letters, I have never been involved in any such deals, I have always fought for the state and for transparent appointment of officials,” the president told the national broadcaster LRT’s news service.

Karbauskis registered on Thursday a draft Seimas resolution that calls for a new parliamentary investigation into unlawful influence on political processes during the tenure of two previous governments.

Ramūnas Karbauskis proposes to investigate the period between 2008 and 2016, with May 2019 to be set as a deadline for completing the probe.

The document, which does not mention any people or legal entities, calls for setting up a special parliamentary commission to investigate possible unlawful influence by persons and groups of persons on the country’s political processes, elections, the formation of parliamentary coalitions, the work of parliamentary groups and individual politicians, and activities by and funding of political parties and public movements.

The LVŽS previously said they would want to investigate Grybauskaitė’s email exchange with the former leader of the Liberal Movement, Eligijus Masiulis, who is one of the suspects in a political corruption case.

Asked about that on Thursday, Karbauskis said the special commission would consider if that matter is worth investigating.
