Lithuanian president discusses human rights protection with ECHR delegation

Efforts to step up protection of human rights and the cooperation between Lithuanian courts and the European Court of Human Rights was on the agenda of Friday’s meeting between Grybauskaitė and an ECHR delegation headed by ECHR President Dean Spielmann.

“The president emphasized the importance of decisions taken by the European Court of Human Rights, which contributes to the improvement of the Lithuanian legal system and enhances the human rights guarantees in the country. Along with other member-states of the Council of Europe, Lithuania should take every measure to abide by the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and thus reduce the number of petitions reaching the court,” the Lithuanian President’s Office said after the meeting.
