Lithuanian president hopes to appoint new prosecutor general in 2015

“The president believes that the new prosecutor general must be appointed this year,” said Ulbinaitė.

According to her, talks are ongoing with potential candidates, but a concrete name and candidacies were not discussed during Tuesday’s meeting.

“A decision will be made in the nearest future,” said Ulbinaitė.

After the term of previous Prosecutor General Darius Valys expired last June, Grybauskaitė has nominated two candidates for the post. Both were rejected by parliament, fueling speculations about a powerplay between the president and some ruling parties. The Prosecutor General’s Office has been run since June by Valys’s deputy Darius Raulušaitis.

According to Lithuania’s Constitution, prosecutor general is appointed by the president with parliament’s approval.
