‘Lithuanian president is pressuring government to resign’, claim Social Democrats

“The Social Democratic Party is surprised that the government it leads has been subject to an obvious and continued pressure from President Dalia Grybauskaitė. Therefore the party is raising the question: does the head of the state want the current government to resign and a new one to be appointed – which would only be a minority government?” the party said in a statement.

The party released the statement after the Lithuanian president called Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius to decide on whether Environment Minister Kęstutis Trečiokas should be allowed to stay in his post after controversy surrounding the rezoning of land in Druskinikai.

The party said that tensions with the President’s Office have been high since the first days of the government’s term were constantly increasing.

“A question that begs itself is not just whether the president wants a minority government, but also what is the function of the President’s Office in the state. Could it be true what some political scientists have been saying that the activities of our head of state have begun to resemble presidents of some neighbouring states in the east,” the party said in the statement.
