After meeting with the candidate on Friday morning, the president signed a decree, proposing the candidate to the parliament, her adviser Rasa Svetiktaitė said.
Proposed for the position by the Trade Union of Prosecutors, Meilutis, 41, has worked as a judge in courts of various levels, serving in leading positions for the past five years.
If appointed, Meilutis would replace Darius Valys whose five-year term is due to expire on June 15. Valys took the position in 2010.
Under Lithuania’s Constitution, the prosecutor general is appointed and dismissed by the president with approval from the parliament.
