Lithuanian president wants ‘objective criteria’ for refugee relocation

“We really hope that the same formula will be used as well, and if some country refused, since it will be done voluntarily, or submitted lower figures, then, with no doubt, the number would increase slightly,” Grybauskaitė told journalists in Vilnius on Friday.

“But we still hope for that formula to remain as it’s the most objective and does not discriminate against any country,” she added.

Brussels initially proposed that Lithuania accept up to 710 refugees. The number came after member states’ prior acceptance of refugees was taken into account. After this provision was removed, Lithuania should expect a lower number.

Lithuania will accept 85 refugees from third countries, EU justice and home affairs ministers agreed during an informal meeting in Luxembourg on Thursday. They will meet on July 20 in Brussels to discuss the relocation of 40,000 people from Italy and Greece.
