On Wednesday 2,000 Lithuanian farmers held a protest in Lithuania’s capital which demanded the Agriculture Minister’s resignation.
The Prime Minister said that in recent times farmers have suffered losses of €75 million. The situation is due to the closure of the Russian market and the global dairy market crisis.
Farmers have criticised the government for low milk purchase prices, even though a base price for milk has now been proposed that Lithuania’s Competition said is unconstitutional and anti-competitive.
Global milk prices have plummeted after the EU lifted quotas and production increased across the EU.
