Lithuanian universities to offer free spots to refugees

“We agreed that we will accept a certain number – every school will accept between a few and a few dozen refugees free of charge. We’re talking about the year 2016,” Alfonsas Daniūnas, the rector of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University and the president of the Lithuanian University Rectors’ Conference, told BNS on Friday.

In his words, students who have interrupted their studies in their home country or young people willing to start university education will be accepted to Lithuanian universities.

The issue was high on the agenda of Friday’s meeting of the conference.

Daniūnas said the refugees would be accepted under the same conditions as all other foreign students, i.e., they will have to find and pay for their own accommodation.

Every school would individually decide on the number of refugees it is willing to enrol, said Daniūnas, emphasizing that the system was not compulsory. The number should be published early next week.

As Europe is faced with a refugee influx, Lithuania has committed itself to receiving 1,105 refugees from countries like Syria, Iraq and Eritrea over two years.
