Lithuanians exchange their litas for euros at post offices

In some post offices, currency exchange will be carried out by regular staff, while in others mobile teams will work at certain schedules.

By midday of 2 January, Lithuanians have exchanged nearly LTL 17 million/EUR 5 million at their local post offices.

Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications Rimantas Sinkevičius was one of the first people in the country to exchange the currency at a local post office. He appreciated a smooth and safe exchange process and thanked the company’s representatives for a proper preparation for Lithuania’s membership in the euro zone.

“I am very happy to be able to congratulate everybody with this historic event as Lithuania became the 19th member of the euro zone. I am pleased to be able to exchange my litas to the euro here, in a Lithuania Post‘s office. I am certain that the company did everything possible to make this process smooth and comfortable,” said the transport minister.

In preparation for Lithuania’s membership in the euro zone, Lithuania Post updated their information system and employed additional one hundred employees who work in mobile teams.

As reported, in cooperation with the Police Department security at the post offices which convert cash will be strengthened. At least one officer will be standing on duty. Money will be securely transported to and from post offices using police vehicles.
