“Given the very complicated situation in the dairy sector, we are asking the European Commission to provide Lithuania with aid. Currently, the milk purchase price in Lithuania is below cost, which threatens farmers with bankruptcy and the dairy sector with extinction,” Agriculture Minister Virginija Baltraitienė says.
In Lithuania, milk producers’ income from milk sales from January to July 2015 was about 30 percent lower than in the same period last year.
On 24 August, Agriculture Minister Virginija Baltraitienė will discuss the Lithuanian dairy sector’s problems with Phil Hogan, the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.
