Lithuania’s death rate among highest in EU

As a long-term trend, the population of the countries making up the European Union has increased by around 100 million since 1960 (from 407 million to 507 million).

However, the population recorded in Lithuania on 1 January 2014 was 2.943 million. While on 1 January 2013 it was 2.971 million. Lithuania was third among the EU countries in three indicators: the highest number of deaths (14.0 percentage points), negative natural growth (-3.9 percentage points) and the highest negative net migration (-5.7 percentage points).
