Lithuania’s democracy held back by corruption, says Freedom House

Lithuania shares the 5th and 6th places with Poland in a rating of 29 states. Estonia received the highest score while Uzbekistan received the lowest.

The annual report on post-Soviet states, published on Tuesday, indicates that the greatest factor bringing down Lithuania’s score is corruption.

The report also mentioned that the Euro and migrant crises in problem have fractured Europe and opened up a path for populists.

“Leading politicians in Central and Eastern Europe—backed by some counterparts in Western Europe—embraced xenophobia and nationalism, positioning themselves as protectors of their countries’ Christian identity against an “invasion” of Muslims,” the report claims.

The report evaluated countries’ election processes, civil society, independent press, central and local government democracy, and the actions and corruption levels of legal institutions.
