They include independent candidate Mindaugas Bastys, Irena Haase, representing the conservative Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats, Labor Party candidate Vigilijus Jukna, Agriculture Minister Giedrius Surplys, nominated by the ruling Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, independent candidate Mindaugas Tarnauskas and Paulius Visockas of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania.
The election in the single-member Zanavykai constituency, covering the southwestern city of Šakiai and several parts of Kaunas and Vilkaviškis District, will take place on Sep. 16.
The parliamentary seat became vacant following Bastys’ decision to renounce his mandate after the parliament failed to strip him of his mandate during impeachment proceedings, which lead to a mass protest outside the parliament.
The Constitutional Court has ruled that Bastys breached its oath and committed a gross violation of the Constitution when he hid his ties with a former KGB officer.
