Lithuania’s election watchdog to cancel MP Bastys’ mandate Wednesday

The lawmaker announced his resignation last week, shortly after the Seimas failed to impeach him.

Bastys won his mandate in the Zanavykų single-mandate constituency, which includes Šakiai and a few polling stations in the districts of Kaunas and Vilkaviškis.

Lithuania’s parliament last week came a dozen votes short of stripping Bastys of his mandate over concealed ties with a former KGB agent.

The Constitutional Court had ruled that the lawmaker grossly violated the Constitution and breached the oath.

After the failed impeachment ballot, parliamentary groups started blaming each other. A few thousand people last week gathered outside the parliament in protest against the decision to leave Bastys in parliament.
