“We had a party convention and people had the opportunity to exchange their opinions. With no doubt, there’s considerable support for the incumbent prime minister from within. But, first, the prime minister himself should make up his mind and announce his decision. I don’t hear about any other candidates within the party,” Sinkevičius told the Žinių Radijas news radio on Wednesday.
The eventual candidate has to be confirmed by the party’s convention and its date has not been set yet.
The latest public poll by Spinter Tyrimai showed in June that Skvernelis would came in fourth in the upcoming presidential election as 6.3 percent would vote for him. Economist Gitanas Nausėda came out as the poll leader, followed by Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis and former diplomat Vygaudas Ušackas of the opposition conservative Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats.
