Lithuania’s interior minister says he will not resign

“I do not intend to resign,” the minister told BNS on Wednesday, adding he plans to restate his opinion during the upcoming meeting with Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius.

Meanwhile Parliamentary Speaker Loreta Graužinienė told the Žinių Radijas radio earlier on Wednesday she would step down if she were Barakauskas.

Barakauskas emphasized that his former advisor Ervinas Raistenskis, who was detained by agents of the Special Investigation Service on Tuesday, left his team two months ago, while his former deputy Algimantas Juocevičius left in July.

Raistenskis currently serves as deputy director at the Interior Ministry’s Property Management Department, while Juocevičius works at Regitra, a firm.

The minister told BNS he had not received any information from special services about possible unlawful deeds by Raistenskis and Juocevičius.

On Tuesday, the Prosecutor General‘s Office and the Special Investigation Service said they were conducting an investigation into large-scale trade aimed at influencing several public procurement contracts at the Interior Ministry over the past years. Five persons including Raistenskis and Juocevičius were detained, with searches carried out in homes and offices of the suspects, as well as the office of the Order and Justice party.
