Lithuania’s Labour Party chooses new candidate for education minister

“We have what to offer to the prime minister. In the nearest future I will schedule a meeting with the prime minister and the new candidate will participate,” Interim Chairman of the Labour Party Valentinas Bukauskas told journalists on Wednesday evening.

Bukauskas categorically refused to reveal the candidate’s name before the nomination was not harmonised with the prime minister. He did not reveal whether one or several candidates would be put forward, whether it was a man or a woman, a member of parliament or a non-partisan person. However, he assured this would be a member of the Labour Party.

“It will be the best candidate who will suit both the prime minister and the president,” Bukauskas told journalists.

Bukauskas hopes to harmonise the nomination with the prime minister next week.

As reported, the Labour Party had recalled Dainius Pavalkis from the education and science minister’s position and put forward Vydas Gedvilas as his successor. However, President Dalia Grybauskaitė refused to appoint Gedvilas due to the report of the Special Investigation Service (STT). On Wednesday Gedvilas withdrew his candidacy for the education and science minister.
