Lithuania’s LRT television to significantly expand its Russian-language programming

The issue was discussed during a joint Wednesday meeting of representatives from the LRT Council, the Council for Culture and the Ministry of Culture.

According to LRT Council Chairman Žygintas Pečiulis, the new programs could start airing this autumn. “We are speaking about a program that would disclose propaganda of hostile countries,” Pečiulis told BNS, adding that the format and details of the new program were not discussed during the meeting yet.

The LRT also plans to increase the number of Western-produced programs for Russian-speakers and is about to finalize the conditions for cooperation with the German state broadcaster Deutsche Welle and the rebroadcasting of its Russian-language content.

As of the middle of the last year, Russian-language news programs produced by the Ukrainian Channel 5 (5 Kanal) as well as the Radio Free Europe in the Czech Republic are being rebroadcast by the LRT and LRT Culture channels in Lithuania.

During its upcoming spring session, the Seimas of Lithuania (parliament) is also set to debate presidential amendments on fighting propaganda. Among other things, the bill envisages fines for rebroadcasters for incitement of war and hatred as well as giving more powers to the Radio and Television Commission of Lithuania.
