Lithuania’s municipal elections: major winners and losers

The liberals won 98 seats during the last local elections in 2011 and ranked seventh. The party jumped to the third place with 216 mandates following the Sunday vote.

The Social Democratic Party of Lithuania has increased the number of its mandates from 328 to 365, and the conservative Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats have come in second with 249 mandates (247 in 2011). The Liberal Movement and the HU-LCD had a coalition in Vilnius District this year and have together won 5 mandates there.

The number of seats held by the Labour Party has dropped from 165 in 2011 to 148. The Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union has maintained a pretty stable position with 138 seats, compared to 147 in 2011.

Meanwhile the Order and Justice party has lost considerably as the number of the party’ council seats almost halved, from 155 to 84.

The coalition of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania and the Russian Alliance has overall won 70 mandates, compared to 61 in 2011.
