Lithuania’s official ethics chief vows to step down

“I understand that I am an official who is appointed by politicians. I will accede to the demand from the speaker of the Seimas and I will make my decision on Tuesday,” he said in a media briefing posted on Lrytas.lt.

Valentukevicius said that he would inform Viktoras Pranckietis, the speaker of the Seimas, about his decision in writing next Tuesday.

Pranckietis, a member of the ruling Lithuanian Peasant and Green Union (LPGU), earlier in the day met with Valentukevičius and called on him to resign.

The parliamentary speaker thinks that Valentukevičius harmed the Chief Official Ethics Commission’s reputation when he voiced his position that Greta Kildišienė, deputy head of the LPGU political group in the Seimas, had not put herself in a conflict of interest situation by driving a car leased by her mother from Agrokoncernas, a company owned by Ramunas Karbauskis, the party’s leader.

The commission did not discuss this issue. Valentukevičius says that he only gave an explanation to Kildisiene.
