Lithuania’s opposition leader asks president to veto social insurance fund budget

He says that parliament adopted the Sodra budget by not only making gross violations of the parliament’s regulations, but the majority of MPs also did not take into account some important and rational proposals suggested by the opposition.

The Conservatives had suggested to pay out all compensations to all pensioners (including those who were employed) as in 2010-2011 their pensions were reduced due to recession and to do that in the first half of 2015. For this purpose, the Conservatives proposed using funds borrowed in the name of the state.

According to Kubilius, the current Government’s unwillingness to deal with this issue as soon as possible makes one think that it might be driven by a very simple political interest: to delay the payment of compensation until the Seimas elections in 2016.
