Lithuania’s radio and TV authority says it has too few powers to fight propaganda

“The media is a powerful weapon, especially when lies and war propaganda are spread and hatred and discord are incited. What can we do to make this weapon less harmful to the society? There’s an interesting fact that Russia’s information channels are registered in EU countries, therefore, the Radio adn Television Commission’s powers are fairly restricted. Considering that Russian TV channels can be streamed online or via satellites, we can conclude that the situation is not good,” Vaitekūnas told a press conference on Wednesday.

Dainius Radzevičius, head of the Lithuanian Journalists’ Union and a member of the commission, underlined that a bigger variety of media contents would be a preventive anti-propaganda measure.

“The right to get as varied contents as possible must be ensured. Quality and variety are key aspects in taking at least preventive measures to solve these problems in today’s geopolitical context,” he said.

The Seimas of Lithuania is holding a discussion on ways to fight hostile propaganda on Wednesday.
