Lithuania’s ruling parties to sign declaration criticizing ‘forced’ EU refugee resettlement

The declaration, penned by the Labour Party, claims that the “forced” refugee resettlement schemes are unfair and harms European unity.

“Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius and the leader of our coalition partner, Order and Justice, Rolandas Paksas both agree with our initiative to immediately sign a political agreement on refugees,” said MP and deputy speaker Vydas Gedvilas of the Labour Party. “We invite other parties, too, to join the agreement and sign the resolution. Although there are not many refugees in Lithuania today, we cannot be certain about what will happen tomorrow.”

The resolution also claims that Lithuania cannot accept more refugees than the 1,105 it has already agreed to host over two years. It also rejects mandatory quotas proposed by some EU member states.

The ruling coalition consists of the Social Democratic Party, the Labour Party and the Order and Justice party.
