Butkevičius said on the radio Žinių Radijas that during the party’s congress on 1 May he is going to speak about the generation change in the Social Democrats’ leadership and voice his preference to see a young politician as his successor in the future.
“Several young social democrats will be named and it will be clearly stated that one of them until the next congress in two years should be elected to the party chairman’s post,” Butkevičius said.
He named Jonava City Mayor Mindaugas Sinkevičius, Vilnius Deputy Mayor Gintautas Paluckas, MP Juras Požela, his advisor Justas Pankauskas and Ramūnas Burokas, leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Youth Union, as potential future leaders in the party.
