Lithuania’s Transport Min pledges to defend natl interests by legal instruments

“The difficult situation goes back to the times when the top management of Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai didn’t think much about the Lithuanian state. Currently, the new executives of the company are examining the European Commission’s decision. One thing is clear – we will use every legal instrument to defend the interests of Lithuania. At the same time, we are making every effort to ensure a smooth and constructive dialogue with the European Commission,” Masiulis said in a comment to BNS.

Earlier on Monday, Lietuvos Geležinkeliai was fined 27.87 million euros for limiting competition by dismantling a railway line from Mazeikiai to Renge, Latvia, back in 2008.

Lithuania can appeal against the fine with the Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Union (EU). Furthermore, payment of the fine would not eliminate the duty for Lithuania to remove the breach, while affected countries could file further claims.
