Lithuania’s TS-LKD nominates ex-econmin for Vilnius mayor

“I have made the decision to run for Vilnius mayor with the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats,” Kreivys told a press conference on Wednesday.

Kreivys was elected to Vilnius Council in November, 2008 but renounced the position shortly after he was appointed economy minister in the Andrius Kubilius government.

Kreivys resigned from the ministerial post in March, 2011 after the official ethics watchdog ruled that he had mixed public and private interests when allocating EU funds to school renovation and a company co-owned by his mother won the tender.

The TS-LKD selection committee picked Kreivys out of four politicians proposed by the party’s presidium. The other three candidates included former Ukrainian Economy Minister Aivaras Abromavičius, Vilnius councilor Valdas Benkunskas and MP Ingrida Šimonytė. The latter announced her decision earlier this week to take part in the TS-LKD presidential primaries.

Meanwhile, TS-LKD MP Agnė Bilotaitė has announced her decision to run for mayor of Lithuania’s western port of Klaipėda.
