Lithuania’s two biggest parties preparing for leadership elections

The coming spring will mark the end of the two-year terms of their respective leaders, Algirdas Butkevičius and Andrius Kubilius. The Lietuvos Žinios daily reports that the new leaders should be known in early May, as both Butkevičius, currently Lithuania’s prime minister, and opposition leader Kubilius make no secret of their plans to run for re-election.

The Social Democrats’ Vice-Chairman Algirdas Sysas says the party’s congress will take place on 1 May. The election campaign has not started yet, as the party is preparing for the 1 March elections to local governments. The candidates will be announced in April.

The conservatives’ presidium has already approved an election plan for the May leadership election. The party’s branches, governance bodies and individual politicians may propose candidates until 10 March. The party’s Vice-Chairman Jurgis Razma says the candidates would then be rated. If no candidate gets the majority of the vote in the first round, a run-off will be held, with the new leader approved during the party’s congress on 9 May.
