London does not wish to breach fundamental principles of EU – Lidington in Vilnius

After his meeting with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius, Lidington told reporters that he believed that the British prime minister’s demands regarding the EU reforms are reasonable, but ways to implement reforms could be subject to negotiations.

“In our PM’s understanding, we do not question the freedom of movement but rather focus on a problem that people get access to a very generous system of social guaranties without any previous contribution,” the UK’s minister said.

Among other proposals, the UK wants to acknowledge that the euro is not the only currency in the EU, therefore member-states with other currencies should not be discriminated against and should be able to opt out when dealing with the eurozone problems. London also wants to dissociate from a closer euro-integration process and allow national parliaments block Brussels’s legislation.

Lithuania’s Linkevičius says that Lithuania is ready to discuss these proposals and agrees with some of the ideas, e.g., to reduce the regulatory burden on businesses, improve competitiveness.
