LVŽS leader’s activity might run counter to Constitution – president

The president said that speaking to journalists in Warsaw, asked about Karbauskis’ initiative to carry out a parliamentary investigation into the president’s activity, including her publicly disclosed email exchanges with former Liberal Movement leader Eligijus Masiulis.

“It’s not about me but about the possible ties between politicians and business. There have been recently ties between business and politicians. This is the same investigation. If the Seimas decides to investigate further, so definitely the Seimas has that right. But they should investigate all politicians who are in the Seimas and who represent the business sector directly,” Grybauskaitė said.

“I don’t have any business, and Karbauskis directly owns a business, he’s a business representative, and his presence in the Seimas is in fact raising questions regarding its constitutionality and consistency with the Constitution as the Constitution states that Seimas members cannot own a business or benefit from it and receive other expenses (sic) (meant “revenue” – BNS). I don’t have such a business,” the Lithuanian president told journalists in Warsaw.

Karbauskis is the main shareholder of the Agrokocernas business group and claims to have handed over his managing rights.

He has announced recently that the LVŽS will initiate a parliamentary probe into the president and other politicians’ behavior. Karbauskis says lawmakers will look into the email exchange between Grybauskaitė and Masiulis, published by the Lietuvos Rytas daily.
