March of the Living to honour victims of Holocaust in Lithuania

The traditional march will proceed along the same path that prisoners from the Vilnius ghetto took before being murdered in Paneriai forest.

From June of 1941 until July of 1944, Nazis killed more than 75,000 people, most of them Jews, in the forests of Paneriai.

Later in the day, the government will present awards to the Righteous Among the Nations. Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius will present awards to those who risked their lives and those of their loved ones to rescue Jews from the Nazi genocide during WWII.

This year, 11 people who rescued Jews from the Nazis will be honoured, including former Lithuanian president Kazys Grinius.

The names of the Righteous Among the Nations will be engraved on a wall in the Garden of the Righteous Among the Nations in Jerusalem.

During the second world war, about 95% of Jews in Lithuania were killed, or about 195,000 people.
