In his words, in the current regional geopolitical situation, this is “definitely not the time” for opening the Moscow House in Vilnius whose declared goal is promotion of cultural and business ties and “friendly neighbourhood”.
“When I met with the Russian ambassador, I made it very clear that it was not possible to have things going smoothly in Vilnius, while the decisions in connection to the Vilnius House in Moscow are procrastinated. This is a bilateral issue and steps will be taken to prevent the opening until the issues are settled in Moscow,” Šimašius told journalists on Friday.
He refused to specify the steps, adding that “there are measures in the arsenal”.
Financed by the Moscow municipality, construction of the Moscow House at the crossing of A.Juozapavičiaus and Rinktinės streets in Vilnius started in 2010.
In early July, director of the Moscow House Alexander Makarov told the Lietuvos Žinios daily that the construction should be finished at the end of this year or in the beginning of 2016.
