MEP Guoga shifts to right-wing political group

Before the change, he was a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), which also includes the Liberal Movement’s members in the EP.

“The European People’s Party is the biggest political group at the European Parliament, which provides more opportunities and a possibility for me to be the person that I am – a modern right-wing activist,” Guoga told BNS Lithuania on Tuesday.

Nearly six months after leaving the Liberal Movement, the politician said he so far had no intentions of joining any political party in Lithuania.

In addition to Guoga, the EPP now includes two Lithuanians, namely Algirdas Saudargas and Laima Liucija Andrikienė of the conservatives. The ALDE group now also includes three Lithuanians, namely, Petras Austrevičius of the Liberal Movement, the Labor Party’s founder Viktor Uspaskich and the Labor Party’s leader Valentinas Mazuronis.

“Probably it is not a normal thing to stay with the Liberals in Europe amid the current situation in Lithuania,” said Guoga.

Guoga left the Liberal Movement after a brief career as the party’s leader following departure of Eligijus Masiulis in May amid corruption charges.

After heading the party for about a week, Guoga terminated his membership in the party amid criticism from other leaders of the political force.
