“There are many effective and successful employment programmes for the local population in Lithuania. We only need to adapt them to foreigners. However, we cannot and have no intention of doing it at the expense of the Lithuanian people,” the minister emphasised. According to her, for the integration to be successful it is crucial that foreigners learn the Lithuanian language.
Representatives of employers and the Lithuanian Labour Exchange seconded the minister. According to them, this would help refugees not only integrate in the labour market but in the society as well.
It is projected that every refugee arriving in Lithuania will have to undergo initial 190-hour Lithuanian language course. Vocational training with additional Lithuanian language courses is being considered for refugees who wish to learn a trade.
