MP Pavilionis won’t run in Lithuanian conservatives’ presidential primaries

Pavilionis said in a statement that he is withdrawing from the presidential race to support the party’s common presidential candidate when he or she is elected.

Thirty-four branches of the Homeland Union have nominated the former diplomat as a candidate for the party’s primaries.

Ingrida Šimonytė, a former finance minister and now a lawmaker, has been nominated by 37 branches, economist Gitanas Nausėda, by 28 branches, and former foreign minister Vygaudas Ušackas, by 27 branches.

Nausėda said on Monday he would stand in the presidential election. Ušackas, a member of the conservative party, announced his decision to run for president earlier this month.

The first round of voting in the presidential election will be held on May 12.
