National Land Service to begin huge investigation of state land seizures in Vilnius

Delfi journalists alleged in a report that influential businessmen living within park reservations had fences off national land and forests, using it for their own purposes. In other cases, state roads had been blocked off as private roads.

A commission formed by the Ministry of Environment after the report found 30 violations of various degrees, many of which indeed involved the seizure of state land.

The National Land Service’s investigation will begin next week.

“We are starting a huge investigative marathon. We have received information from you and from other individuals and we’ve created a schedule for reviews that will begin next week. In these two parks, we will perform 150 reviews that will take until the beginning of November. It will be a very expansive review, and I’ve never heard of such a large and complex investigation being held before,” said Audrius Gelžinis, a National land Service representative.

After Delfi’s investigation, the two parks’ director, Vida Petiukonienė, stepped down from her post.
