NATO understands threats to our region – Grybauskaitė

“It is in fact the first visit to our region. He will be visiting all three Baltic states, including Lithuania on my invitation. It is crucial and symbolic. It shows that NATO understands our region’s situation and threats that it faces. Therefore, one of the first foreign visits, only having started working a month ago, is to the Baltic states,” Grybauskaitė said in an interview to the national radio LRT.

According to the head of state, the meeting with the NATO secretary general will focus on “threats, preparation to counter them, what the countries can do by themselves and what NATO must do, how Wales decisions will be realised and implemented”.

“Without a shadow of doubt, our capabilities will be showcased. In addition, as a receiving country we will demonstrate what assistance we can provide in receiving support, how we will deal with infrastructure, logistics, military exercise conditions as they will take place one after another. This does enhance security of the whole region. Our own readiness, how we receive support, what conditions we provide are essential and integral parts for ensuring regional security,” emphasised Grybauskaitė.

The president and the NATO secretary general will visit Airspace Control Centre in Karmėlava, where the joint control and reporting centre of the three Baltic States is located. The two will also meet Lithuanian and NATO member states’ soldiers.
