This is the third ASF outbreak in the District of Ignalina and the sixth registered case in domestic pigs in Lithuania so far. Two other cases of the disease have been found in wild boars.
Two dead pigs were found on a farm in Ignalina district last Saturday. Samples were taken to the National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute and all four pigs on the farm tested positive for ASF, the service said in a press release.
The largest ASF outbreak was detected on a pig complex owned by Idavang, the biggest pig grower in Lithuania, in the Ignalina district in late July. The farm’s entire stock of around 19,000 pigs was destroyed.
The three Baltic countries and Poland are drafting a joint plan for the European Commission in a bid to obtain 100 percent compensation for losses caused by the disease.
The EU’s executive body in late August divided Lithuania into three ASF risk zones and thus tightened trade in pork.
