New ambassador of Spain presents letters of credence to Lithuanian president

During their meeting, the president and the ambassador discussed security situation in the region and economic relations between Lithuania and Spain. According to the president, decisions adopted at the NATO summit was a step towards enhancing Lithuania’s security and now it was important to implement these measures.

The president underlined that it was necessary to promote bilateral economic cooperation and further increase trade volumes which had grown by almost 17 percent this year. Lithuania and Spain can share best practices as the two countries are linked by aspiration to reduce energy dependence.

Emilio Fernandez-Castano y Diaz-Caneja, 64, holds a degree in law and international relations. Before his appointment as ambassador to Lithuania, he was consul general in Milan. The diplomat earlier held different positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain, including the post of deputy minister in charge of EU affairs, ambassador to Australia and New Zealand, ambassador to Algeria, and director of the international economic relations department.
