New Lithuanian interior minister promises to be creative

Skvernelis said this was not a normal practice to hire members of political staff at the ministry for permanent positions in government institutions. Every head of such institutions, he added, should resist pressures to create new positions for specific persons.

Juocevičius, who was fired from the Ministry of the Interior, was employed as advisor to the director of Regitra. MP Agnė Bilitaitė, chairwoman of the parliamentary group Corruption Free Lithuania, addressed the Chief Official Ethics Commission over this fact.

In addition, Skvernelis did not promise any radical changes in the system and said he will use a creative approach.

“I like to create. I believe this is harder than destruction. In this case I will talk to all ministerial divisions openly and will not hide anything so that there are no fears or rumours. We will solve everything in a civilised and orderly manner. I think people should be given an opportunity to reveal and use their creative potential. They should not think that an “executioner” is coming and heads will roll. This will not be the case,” said former police commissioner general Skvernelis.

Skvernelis will assume office at the Ministry of the Interior after taking an oath at the Seimas.
