“Nearly 100 people gathered and we decided to create a movement of our own,” Malinauskas told BNS on Thursday.
In his words, this will not be a political party but rather a movement for the local elections registered under the Association Law: “Our main concern is the future of Druskininkai, the results, the future, and the prosperity of Druskininkai.”
Malinauskas and the bulk of the Druskininkai branch left the Social Democratic Party early this month after the party suggested they should suspend their membership.
Malinauskas announced his departure at the beginning of April. He was questioned as a special witness in probe conducted by the Special Investigation Service into the suspected influencing of a governmental resolution needed for the legalization of a building. The probe was later dropped.
The leadership of the Social Democratic Party then said Malinauskas should suspend his membership in the party in the wake of the scandal surrounding the building.
