After lengthy negotiations and technical arrangements,Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways PLLC) and Polish company Przewozy Regionalne are to send a train on the first pilot trip from Białystok to Kaunas on Thursday.
The negotiations on opening the route were started in March 2015. Regular service will begin on June 17 and modern Polish trains will carry passengers from Kaunas to Białystok.
“This important agreement will allow us to reach Europe in a fast and safe way. Those who wish to continue travelling to Warsaw, Szczecin, Gdynia or Elka can do so by simply boarding another train. We are negotiating for a route Kaunas – Warsaw – Krakow. It would be very convenient, because travellers will then be able to go from Warsaw to Berlin, Vienna, Prague or any other city,” CEO of Lithuanian Railways PLLC, Stasys Dailydka, said.
The service will run on weekends. The train will leave Kaunas and Białystok stations in morning and mid-day, and will come back in mid-day and night, respectively. A ticket from Kaunas to Białystok will cost €11 and the trip will take about 4 hours and 40 minutes.
