Two groups of troops will carry out six-month rotations at the operational headquarters in Kabul and Regional Command-West in Herat. The soldiers will depart for Afghanistan in early July, Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defence said.
“Even though the scope of the NATO mission in Afghanistan is decreasing, its objectives and responsibility persist. Our aim is to transfer our knowledge and experience to the Afghan National Security Forces as it is developing,” acting Chief of the Joint Staff Colonel Albertas Dapkus said during the ceremony and wished the troops to stay vigilant and professional in their assignments.
Lithuania contributes the non-combat NATO operation in Afghanistan designed to train, advise and assist the Afghan National Security Forces. The total strength of the Resolute Support Mission is currently approximately 12,000.
Roughly 20 Lithuanian troops are currently serving in Afghanistan as part of Operation Resolute Support, and one Lithuanian soldier is assigned to the United Nations Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA). Lithuania’s military personnel are conducting the service in three headquarters located in Afghan cities of Kabul, Kandahar, and Herat.
