Lithuania recently received a new Pesa 730 ML train made in Poland which will be put on track this spring. By the coming autumn, all seven Pesa 730 ML trains should reach Lithaunia.
Stasys Dailydka, the General Manager of Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways), said that “Instead of currently operating large and heavy trains, we will use smaller and more mobile three-wagon trains. They will run more frequently, and on weekends, when passenger traffic increases, several such trains will be combined into a single assembly. Such practice is widely used in the EU.”
About half a million passengers are serviced on the route between Vilnius and Klaipėda. The trip takes 3 hours and 45 minutes.
This January, the number of passengers on domestic railway routes was 9.2% higher compared to the same period in 2015. The biggest growth has been reported on the route Vilnius – Kaunas, with over 100,000 passengers taking the train this January, or 14% more than in January 2015. Nearly 32,000 passengers took the Vilnius – Klaipėda train this January, 3% more than during the same period last year.
