No exceptions for ‘light drinks or special events’ in new alcohol laws, says minister

“The most important thing is not to have any exemptions, be it for certain events, alcohol types or, after all, groups of businesses. General principles must apply to all,” Gustas said, commenting on proposed measures to limit access to alcohol following a cabinet meeting on Monday.

“There have been some proposals discussed in Parliament. Some envisaged exemptions for cider or types of wine during certain events. In my opinion, and in the opinion of the government, there shouldn’t be any,” Gustas told reporters after discussing measures to limit alcohol availability in the country with other ministers.

Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis said that a crucial part of the effort should be investments in the fight against the black market in alcohol.

“In order to introduce restrictions, we must have a comprehensive approach – that is, alongside restrictions, we must strengthen our grip on the black market and perhaps adopt long-term prevention measures in education,” Skvernelis said.
