Northern Lithuanian city in rows over Soviet soldiers’ memorial

Aurimas Nausėda, conservative member of the city council, told BNS that the obelisk and the graves could be moved to the Ginkūnų cemetery close to the city.

“It would make sense to transfer the obelisk to the Ginkūnų cemetery, which already includes graves of about 900 Soviet soldiers, with due respect and in agreement with the Russian Embassy,” said Nausėda.

Meanwhile, Sartauskas disagrees with the idea.

“First of all, it would cost a lot, secondly, I am against removing the graves, as this is not the only cemetery of war victims we have in the city,” Sartauskas told BNS.

The Resurrection Square in central Šiauliai currently includes graves of Soviet troops of various nations killed in battles for Šiauliai.
