Obama pledges to reaffirm defence commitments in Estonia next week

“In Estonia, I will reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the defence of our NATO allies,” Obama said at a news conference in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

The US president emphasized that his country did not plan to provide military assistance to Ukraine, which is not a member of NATO but seeks to rally the international community for economic and political pressure against Russia.

“We are not taking military action to solve the Ukrainian problem,” said Obama.

The US leader intentionally refused to refer to the Russian actions as “invasion”, even when asked about the concept by journalists, he used a milder term “incursion”. Meanwhile, Lithuania on Thursday called the Russian moves “an obvious military invasion by the armed forces of the Russian Federation of the Ukrainian territory”.

Obama is scheduled to meet with the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in Tallinn next Wednesday, shortly before the NATO summit in Wales that should discuss additional security measures in Eastern Europe.
