On the new Seimas Speaker

Political scientist Vladas Laučius said on the INFO TV show that the new Speaker will find it a good time to take up the role because the previous Seimas Speaker, at least in the eyes of the public, was definitely not a strong political figure or even Speaker, alfa.lt reported.

“It appears to me that after the former Seimas Speaker Loreta Graužinienė only her colleague Audronė Pitrėnienė could have made more gaffes and nonsense. This time the situation is better than in last term’s Seimas. Of course we shouldn’t raise the bar high because sometimes the bar is raised so high for politicians that it would appear that it was a question of life or death, as if in each position we expected a Churchill, Roosevelt or Reagan,” the political scientist spoke on expectations.

According to him, the election results only showed that the people wanted new faces, even if they had little political experience, but at least were not the same old faces.

“The “Peasants” received a great deal of the vote, earned many mandates, such was the will of the people. It appears that political experience, work experience in Seimas is not the most important trait for which people would vote or see as necessary in Seimas,” Laučius said on the show.

The political scientist said he believes it is difficult to image how the “Peasants” will come together as a team, but at least for now it is clear that all the levers of leadership and decision making are in their hands.

“This party has one strong leader in Ramūnas Karbauskis. I could hardly beleive it, that at least in the near future any party member would resolve to independently oppose the party chairman and support a different policy line,“ Laučius spoke on the “Peasant” leadership.
