Eleven members of the 31-strong council have already signed a motion to initiate proceedings for removing the mayor from office.
The opposition accuses Račkauskas of breaching his oath of office. The motion mentions, among other things, the Chief Official Ethics Commission‘s ruling the city’s mayor placed himself in conflict of interest situations when he failed to withdraw from decisions on several projects involving his son.
The non-party mayor described the opposition’s move as “desperate”.
Račkauskas ran in the municipal election on the list of the public election committee Kartu (Together). The Kartu political group has eight seats on the city’s council.
